Enlistment

Sam and Zack signed up more than a year after the Civil War broke out. In Harrisburg on August 9, 1862 in Harrisburg, Sam enrolled in Company E of the 132nd Pennsylvania Volunteers, a 9 month regiment, in Captain Michael Whitmoyer's Company E. He was 23 years old, 5 foot 6 and 3/4's inches tall, with dark hair and black eyes. He listed his profession as "teacher", and received a bounty of $25 plus a premium of $2.

Sam took part in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville, was promoted to Corporal on February 25, 1863, and mustered out with his regiment on May 24, 1863. Two years later, on March 13, 1865, he re-enlisted in Philadelphia for one year, as a private in the Sixth Regiment Pennsyvlania Volunteer Cavalry, Company B, also known as Rush's Lancers. This time his bounty was $100. His unit, which was combined with the Second Regiment Provisional Pennsylvania Cavalry, was at Appomattox. Sam mustered out in Louisville, Kentucky on August 7 , 1865.

                      Zack

On August 7, 1862 Zack enrolled in Philadelphia for three years in the 114th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, also known as Collis' Zouaves. Zouaves wore colorful North African-inspired uniforms. His bounty was $27. His unit's first real action was at the Battle of Fredricksburg. Zack died from Typhoid fever in the hospital in camp at Falmouth, Virginia, on December 12, 1862, the day before the battle began.
