Sam was the first child of Andrew W. Wood (born September 8, 1793, either in Germantown or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and Elizabeth Uplinger (born March 26, 1805). It the was second marriage for both. Andrew W. Wood married Ann Keyser on November 14, 1813 in Germantown. They had 9 children (Susan, William, Sophia, Joseph, Elizabeth, Mary, Andrew, Ann, and Amelia) before Ann died on November 28, 1837. Baby Ann was less than two years old when she died in 1832. William died a month before his mother. Sophia, and Joseph died five days apart in February the following year.
Elizabeth's name was Elizabeth Wenner when she married Andrew.
Andrew and Elizabeth were married on May 8, 1838 in Sugarloaf. Elizabeth died on March 14, 1841, 11 days after giving birth to Sam's younger brother Zachariah. By then they were living in Butler Township in Luzerne County.
Andrew married Prudence Abbot (born June 4, 1800) less than two months later, on May 2, 1841. Presumeably Prudence was the only mother either remember. She and Andrew had two daughters, Sarah Ann and Margaret. Andrew W. Wood lived on March 9, 1856. Prudence died on August 16, 1876.
