Facebook Group Protests Stockholm Transit Cuts
Posted by george on 22nd September 2007

The newspaper “Metro” reports that in less than two days, more than 2000 people joined a new Facebook group protesting the latest plans by SL, Stockholm’s public transportation company.
Last week the head of SL announced that they would be boosting the price of their monthly transit card by 70 kronor (around 10 dollars) or 11 percent. That follows a 20 kronor a month boost last year, and comes as official Sweden is supposed to be keeping inflation below 2 percent. At the same time, the head of SL said they would use the money to improve service.
It turns out that the “improvement” is the cutting of subway services after midnight during the week.
The Facebook group “Stoppa SL:s vardagsmord” is a protest against the cutbacks. They argue that replacing subways with night buses will increase violence, and will discourage people from going out at night.
