When My Path Crossed Ingmar Bergman’s
Posted by george on 30th July 2007

Film legend Ingmar Bergman is dead, at the age of 89. During my more than 30 years in Sweden, my path only crossed his once, at a grocery store on the island of Gotland.
.
Bergman’s home for much of his life has been on the tiny island of Fårö, a short ferry journey from the much larger island of Gotland, a hugely popular tourist destination. At least ten years ago, our family was vacationing on Gotland, and after a day catching the sights of Fårö (which is pretty spectacular) we had stopped off at the co-op grocery store in the small community on the Gotland side of the ferry.
Standing in line, I realized that Ingmar Bergman was a couple of people behind me. So when I got back to the car, I told the kids (then aged somewhere between 5 and 10) that a really famous person was in the store, and probably about to come out into the parking lot. Sure enough, a couple of minutes later Ingmar Bergman emerged.
As I pointed excitedly to him, instead of reacting as one might expect to yet another celebrity sighting, he waved to the boys with a friendly smile.
His films helped introduce me to this country, many are masterpieces. But that one kind act of greeting a couple of small children is my strongest impression of the famous director.
