Swedish Radio News reports that according to a new study playing computer and video games is the opposite of harmful to kids.

Carin Falkner, an instructor in Education at Jönköping University, has studied children’s game playing. She says she wanted to go beyond the convention wisdom that spending time in front of a screen just results in overweight kids. She has interviewed around 20 young people and visited a number of Swedish LAN parties, where large numbers of people come together to play online games.

In her study she says the young people she met are healthy because of playing computer games. The games provide community and a culture that is drug-free. She says some do become addicted to playing, but these are very few.

Last December Jönköping was the site of Dreamhack 2006, the World’s largest LAN party.
