Sweden and Iraqi Refugees

NPR’s “Morning Edition” (previously on the air in Stockholm, but no longer) reported today about Sweden’s generous policies towards Iraqi refugees:
After four years of chaos and violence, nearly two million Iraqis remain outside their country, according to the UN agency for refugees. Most are overwhelming neighboring countries, particularly Jordan and Syria. In Europe, Iraqi applications for asylum have doubled over the past three years. But few European countries are offering much refuge, with one exception: Sweden.
Fully 40 percent of the Iraqis given asylum in Europe are in Sweden. The Swedish policies differ markedly from those of Germany and Britain, which not only are letting in few refugees, they are actually sending many back to Iraq.
Last year Sweden gave asylum to 9000 refugees from Iraq, compared to 7000 allowed to stay in the United States this year, and fewer than 500 given asylum in the US during the past three years.
