Chinese New Year in San Francisco

The arrival of the Year of the Pig is being marked today with the annual Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco, one of the largest homes to Chinese outside of Asia.
However, KTVU television, which is broadcasting the parade live, is calling it instead Year of the Boar, which apparently sounds nicer! There are lots of kids dressed in varying pig costumes. It’s very much like other American parades, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, or the Rose Parade in Pasadena, only with a Chinese theme.

Besides the marching bands, there are numerous floats from some of the many Chinese schools in the San Francisco Bay Area and other local institutions, as well as Lion dances and other presentations by various Kung-fu schools.

Stockholm saw Chinese New Year celebrations two weeks ago. The Lunar New Year seems to be celebrated during the two weeks between the New Moon and the Full Moon.
Unlike the deep snow in Stockholm at the New Moon, tonight sees warm spring-like weather in San Francisco. Temperatures today reached 18 degrees C, and it’s currently 15 degrees C in San Francisco.
