Golden Gate California White is Back
Posted by george on 10th February 2007
A few weeks ago the Swedish state liquor stores had to pull their most popular product, Golden Gate wine from California. Now it’s back, under the old name of California White, but with the same carton decoration depicting the Golden Gate Bridge.
Sales of Golden Gate wine, generally in 3 liter cartons, reached 3.3 million liters at Sweden’s state liquor stores between January and November last year. But Stockholm District Court has ruled that the name, which has been used by the state-owned liquor distributors Vin & Sprit for nearly 10 years, belongs to the world’s third largest wine maker, the low profile American company The Wine Group, and its subsidiary Golden State Vintners, which it bought in 2004.
Previously the same mixture of California wines had been sold under the name of California White (as well as California Red), but apparently sales took off when Vin & Sprit put the product into large cartons, and put on a picture of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Now it is once again California White.
