Former Swedish Foreign Minister Sten Andersson Dies

Posted by george on 17th September 2006

Ironically as Swedes go to the polls, a major Swedish politician has died:

Sten Andersson, Sweden’s former foreign minister and a close colleague of murdered prime minister Olof Palme, has died at the age of 83.

Andersson was a lifelong Social Democrat, and served as party secretary for twenty years, between 1962 and 1982. He was appointed social affairs minister in 1982, and foreign minister in 1985. He held the post until the Social Democrats lost power in 1991.

Sten Andersson was best known for encouraging dialog between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization. From retirement in recent years he has been highly critical of Göran Persson’s government for turning its back on the Palestinians and taking a much more pro-Israeli stance.
