Direct Online Democracy Instead of Established Parties
Posted by george on 5th September 2006

Swedes go the polls on September 17, in the traditional fashion. The only major difference is that where previously voters could cast their ballots starting a couple of weeks early at post offices, there are no longer many regular post offices in Sweden (we buy stamps and pick up packages at tobacco shops and similar stores). So early voting has been moved instead to city halls and other public buildings. Since these are nowhere near as conveniently placed as the post offices were, this may have a negative effect on turn-out this time around.
But while many Swedes do their banking, shopping, and ticket-booking online, there are currently no plans for official Internet voting in Sweden. However, in one Stockholm suburb there’s been a 4 year experiment in direct online democracy.
