SMART-1 Lunar Probe Crashes into the Moon

The Swedish-built Smart-1 lunar probe has successfully finished its mission, crashing into the Moon. The crash was intended to create a crater between 3 and 10 meters in diameter in the Lake of Excellence. It’s hoped that an analysis of the resulting dust cloud will reveal what the Moon is made of, which might indicate whether it was once part of the Earth.

It’s the first European Moon mission. SMART stands for Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology, and it’s hoped that the technology can be used for more Eurropean space probes to other parts of the Solar System.
