Swedish Forces to Darfur?

Posted by george on 1st September 2006

“Svenska Dagbladet” reports that Sweden could send 190 soldiers to the planned United Nations force in Sudan’s wartorn Darfur province.

The newspaper says plans to send a engineering unit, together with Norway, may be the reason Sweden has only volunteered to send a naval warship to Lebanon, and not soldiers. The Swedish government has come in for strong criticism for not helping out more militarily in Lebanon. Norway’s Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Störe has said that thy reason his country is only sending a naval force to Lebanon is because of plans to send troops to Darfur.

Funding for the Darfur force would be available from the end of the year, when the current Swedish peacekeepers in Liberia finish their mission.

But before the UN force can go into Darfur to relieve the over-burdened African Union force, the government of Sudan has to approve. And since it is the government of Sudan that is most certainly behind the murder, rape, and forced exile of the people of Darfur, few believe any such permission will be forthcoming.
